1. What the signed inventory is (and is not)

The household packing list is the signed item inventory of what left the origin house: carton numbers, major furniture, appliances, declared values, condition notes, and your signature. Rehousing Packers & Movers crews pack to the list — they do not invent a second loading sheet on WhatsApp after the truck has gone.

It is not:

• The 30-day moving calendar at /blog/household-shifting-checklist-30-days (declutter, landlord notice, school transfer).
• The survey quotation PDF (that is a price, not a carton list).
• The GST tax invoice (that is the bill HR and insurers file — see /packers-movers-bill-for-claim).

Claims fail without a signed item inventory because the insurer, the employer, and our claims desk can only match damage or shortage against what you signed at loading. A verbal “sab aa gaya” is not that record.

2. Fields the packing list must carry

A usable signed inventory in India is a table, not a paragraph. At minimum we print:

Survey sets the scope; loading day writes the inventory. The sequence we actually run:

1. Surveyor / crew lead numbers cartons as they are taped (kitchen 1…n, bedroom 1…n, not a single dump of “boxes”).
2. Major items (sofa, bed, fridge, washing machine, TV) get their own line, not a bundle called “furniture”.
3. High-value lines (electronics, appliances) get a rupee figure if you want them on the declared-value total.
4. You walk the list. Corrections happen before the last carton is on the truck.
5. You sign. The crew packs to that signed list — extra loose items you hand over after signing are added only if the list is re-opened and re-signed.

If you refuse to sign, we still have a crew copy, but a claim that “something is missing” without your signed inventory is the file that stalls. That is why this page exists separately from the 30-day calendar.

4. Origin signature and destination check

Two moments. Mixing them is how “the inventory was signed” becomes an argument.

• Origin (loading): you sign that the packing list matches what went on the vehicle. This is the signed inventory claims start from.
• Destination (delivery): you check carton numbers against that same list. Shortage or visible damage is noted on the delivery copy the same day, not a week later.

Open cartons that look crushed before the crew leaves, if the destination copy is still in play. Hidden damage found later still needs the signed origin inventory plus photos; we do not treat an unsigned delivery WhatsApp as a new list.

Jewellery, cash, and undocumented antiques are outside ordinary household packing unless they were written onto the declaration at survey. We will not add them to the inventory after the truck has left Greens Sector 74A dispatch or any other origin.

5. Claims: signed inventory + GST invoice + cover

A transit-damage or shortage claim is a document file. You need:

• The signed inventory (this page) — carton numbers and declared values you actually signed.
• A GST tax invoice — heading “Tax Invoice”, GSTIN 06AAMCR0254J1ZA, CIN U63031HR2022PTC105105, taxable value, GST amount. Issued from /packers-movers-bill-for-claim. A quotation is not that invoice.
• The cover in force: complementary company transit cover up to ₹50,000, or full declared-value transit insurance at 3% of declared value with a partner insurer. Written on the quotation or lorry receipt. Detail: /transit-insurance-packers-movers.
• Photos of the damaged item and packing, taken at delivery if possible.

Declared value on the packing list is what the 3% product means. Under-declaring to shrink the charge also shrinks the claim. Over-declaring without a matching signed inventory is equally useless: the claims desk asks for the list you signed, not a later total.

6. Put the inventory on the survey quote
